Okay, I've been working on my RT build for the last year, all from scratch. I now have the engine fired-up and running, and am getting ready to run the brake lines and throttle cable. Then I found out that my speedometer cable on the original motorcycle (Honda Magna V65 1100) doesn't actually run from the engine to the speedometer, it runs from the speedometer to the front tire! So, as you might imagine, my design does not use the original front tire of the bike (I have a 1970 VW front end), and I am currently trying to figure out a woe-around for the speedometer. So, I am here seeking some advice as to what I might consider for the speedometer at this point. Any ideas folks? Thanks, James

I have used a push bike speedo on a hillclimb car and it worked but over 90 MPH it would not read accurately That had the magnet on the wheel.

Great! Thanks much. I will look into these options. I appreciate it much.
FYI: I've tried to upoload some pictures, but it seems I need an account like Flicker or something to link to them, which I don't have at the moment. I will as soon as I get some time.
Thanks again,
James

Here is another question: There are HUD apps that you can download onto your phones that offer speedometer readings. I have used them before and they are pretty accurate. This option would eliminate any wiring at all, but I do not know if they are legal as a bonafide speedometer. Are they?

Thanks again, James James, for photo uploading try ImgSafe.org where you signup for an account but it is free. They only do pictures, no videos.

Early VW's ran the speedo cable to the front wheel. Since you're using a VW front end, couldn't you use a modified cable that had the bike connection on one end, and the VW on the other? The only issue I can see is getting the cable to turn at the correct speed for your speedometer. Just a thought.

Skratch: I didn't know that info about VW speedometers, I'll definitely look into it and see if it is an option. Thanks DaveJ: I'll take a look at Imagesafe today, thanks.

JJ, here is a picture of a VW front hub showing how the speedo cable works. Most Speedometer need about 1000 RPM at 60 MPH but some are different too. You may need a matching adapter to get the RPM to match your speedo.

I think the Koso stuff is hard to beat, quality vs price. My digital speedo (discontinued model)is over 10 years old accurate and never a hiccup. Only negative for me is it's too bright at night and not dimmable.

Only negative for me is it's too bright at night and not dimmable. I have this problem on my Burgman 650 scooters digital dash. During daylight it can be hard to read but at night it is REAL bright. We have a member on the Burgman site that will take the Spedo unit apart, replace all the bulbs with what ever color LED's you want and put a dimmer knob on it. Lots of work but do'able.

How about a cheap Garmin, get speedo, directions, maps and all kinds of info and they run off of 12vdc

Man, I seriously appreciate all the feedback. It's amazing the things that you can get hung-up on in the process of a build. Thanks all.
