I have ridden ATVS for years, and recently got into adventure bikes. I like the greater off road capability of the quad, but don't like the fact that I have to trailer it to the woods, and then ride back to my starting point. We have thousands of miles of forest service roads and I really enjoy the adventure bikes on them. However, you give up a lot, especially early/late in the year, when you have bare ground at lower elevations, but snow at higher ones. A 3wd, reverse trike seems like a perfect mix. Decent off road capability, good traction in snow/mud and when needed on steep hill climbs, and best of all, street legal on any road. Imagine the offspring of a Can-Am Spyder and a Renegade. Does anyone know of anything like this, or have you built one? I'm considering picking up a used 4x4 quad with a solid rear axle, building single rear wheel swing arm and making my own. Need to study up a little more on what's involved. One problem is that all higher-end quads have independent rear suspension, which would add complexity.
I'm also toying with a Ural sidecar motorcycle, they are available with 2WD. But they aren't geared well for off-road use.

I'm pondering how to handle the driveline. Starting with a 4x4 quad would be much simpler than building a transfer case and reverse gear mechanism, plus adding a front wheel drive to a bike driveline. But most quads have a CVT belt drive and limited HP. I'd probably want to start with a Can-Am, ideally the 1000. But I'm not sure the CVT or driveline would really hang in for tens of thousands of miles on the street. I need to look at options for starting with a bike and adding a transfer case and front driveline. I'm not sure just how the Subbie ones are set up-do they have a separate front differential, or is it integral with the transmission? I want to keep this pretty narrow (no more than 50") in order to run it on ATV trails.

I saw this toy a couple of days ago and remembered this thread.

The weird RT off-road trike i mentioned before. Not 3wheel propelled, but could be by using buggy suspension and a Subaru transmission. (note) Subaru trans are setup for 90/10 front to rear drive ratio SRX660

I am currently working on a on/off road trike myself. It has an adjustable ride height of 5"- 9.5", and is powered by a Kawasaki ZX14 engine. It still is in the design stages, but it should be a blast, and it will be street legal also.Attachment Deleted

Who needs 3WD? Reverse trikes being so light will go a lot of places you wouldn't expect. youtu.be/Evmk_4VXsnUAndrew.

Yes, as a matter of fact there is, or soon will be. I am still in the very early stages of building one. Is this close to what you are thinking about? Attachment Deleted
