Don't think it will happen. I don't think a working prototype has been produced that is fit for independent testing even after 4 yrs of the company talking a big game.
The 6000 to 8000 price is just silly. The much simpler Can-Ams' go for 20 grand and I doubt the manufacturer has a great profit margin or other established companies would be jumping in. High production numbers would help, but the Elio will never sell for anything near its projected price.
This is the price of a Japanese middle-weight bike and these people are not idiots when it comes to minimizing production costs.
Go to Wikipedia for "Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation", or Google "Dale three wheeler"
History has its lessons if folks will pay attention.
I like the concept. Hope I am dead wrong.

I love the concept but like you I dont believe they will achieve the target price and it wont be available until july 2014 in the states and thats the best case if it happens at all
Be happy to be proven wrong and Id have one tomorow if they were available at that price.
Looks like ill have to build my own ;D

Well, the local news had a spot on this trike. Projected less than $7000 is what they reported. Looks like you can put $1000 reserve on one and get placed on a list of first buyers and receive $1500 off the final price. That's a 50% on the dollar investment, IF it makes it out of production. First release date was said to be mid year 2014. We shall see. My luck is I put the "Non-Refundable" $1000 down, and June next year the price is now $20,000. Do I get a first or after? ;D

yuk - it's ugly, doesn't look fun to drive, and just screams "made cheap to be cheap for cheap 'ol you" The much simpler Can-Ams' ...- Not that simple; Spyder is brimming with tech - ABS, G-sensors and nanny programming, power steering. But I agree that their price is wishful thinking etc

I believe that this will never happen (hope I am wrong ) but the factory direct approach type deal will not work. can't hold to price and without dealers to service and pre mote and give imput to manufacturer this can not make it. a lot of people with deposits will be disappointed I think.

If you are familiar with cars you can pick out the parts sourced from production cars ie. A/C vents are Ford truck. Looks like they are buying overstock at a cheap price. That will work for the first production run but when the suppliers have to fire up the plant to make another run, the price is going to jump. There is no way they can make and sell the car for $6800. With the way they are promoting the one car and slowly doling information out, they are trying to get as many investors as possible and are going to bail on them. I hope I am wrong also, but you can't ignore the old saying: if it looks, acts and sounds like a duck.....

Tesla started small and used coach works by Lotus. It was basically a factory turn key kit car where Tesla only had to modify the engine, fuel storage and management systems. The whole car was still 75% Lotus. Like the AC cars and Shelby.
My take is like stated above, invest your $1000 USD and come a year later and they are off to the Cayman Islands or such.
IF like 5 major backers were to join this venture and set up a board that controlled where and how the investors money was used, I'd easily put $5000 down or more. But with this start up company wanting us to invest a NON-REFUNDABLE $1000 with a $500 return on top when they go into production has "SCAM" stamped all over it.
Too bad, looks like a cool trike.

I went to the Elio web site and browsed thru it again. Still about the same data as before. One thing I did notice is you can now pay to reserve in three category's. Before there was the "I'm all in" and the top "Buy your way up" level of "I want more" with both being NON REFUNDABLE. Now they have a middle category of "I want in" that is REFUNDABLE. But I ask myself, how do you get your refund if the money is off shore and the owners have gone "POOF", MIA. I am not sure it this will be the case but until I find out about guarantee of how the money is returnable, I will not be giving up a dime.

I can and most likely build my own trike, but if one as well designed and built at the Elio is for $7000 I'd go for one. I'd have a hard time building an open air trike that may get 50'ish MPG for $7000. But an inclosed cabin, air conditioning, radio, airbags, ABS, power steering, two place seating, storage and 86 MPG for $7000? Add a small turbo from like a Subaru Justy or Suzuki Sprint 1000cc but keep the boost down to like 4-6 PSI, just for PASSING GEAR.
