Have been reading a lot on this. The Revised codes for Washington State read that it must have 2 or 3 tires in contact with the ground to be considered a motorcycle or trike. If you have two wheels in front and add even 2 wheels to the rear close together, it is 4 tires touching and is a car.
The HOV lanes are open to all motorcycles and trikes with 1 occupant.
And you must have a SideCar or Trike endorsement added to your drivers license UNLESS it has all three of these:
1. A SEAT in a partially or completly inclosed area.
2. Safety belts.
3. A STEERING WHEEL.
So a reverse trike enclosed somewhat with a seat, seatbelts and a steering wheel can drive with just a normal license and use the HOV lanes.
A Can AM Spider RT must have an endorsement. Many of those bolt on "TRIKE" kits hat put 2 training wheels (Danson) on the outside have 4 tires on the ground and are not considered a trike.
I can build a trike, take it to our State Patrol inspector and they will inspect it for safety and for any stolen parts. If it passes they issue a new Washington VIN plate. Then you just license it as a three wheel motorcycle and insure it as a motorcycle with sidecar.
