I found this trike and may do this as soon as possible since I already have a Honda 250 bike i can use for this. I really like this idea. SRX660

I really like the look of that thing, but I'm not sure I'd like having the engine and fuel tank right beside me. Besides the heat, you'd be in for it if you were hit in the side.
However, it's really nice to have that engine in there cause it give it a nice tight look.

That thing does look cool, but I think it will be a very loud ride having the motor right next to you...I would definitely build a fire wall with sound insulation to cut down the heat and noise.
I also think a smaller V motor would provide more torque and more room...like the Honda V4 from a V-Max...now that would give you gobs of torque.

I agree about the heat and sound issues. I have used foam sound deadner like is used in tractor cabs for the engine surround in my Grinnall Scorpions. The heat is not an issue from the engine, but the K series BMW engine is liquid cooled and the Scorpion has a front mounted radiator that can cook your legs. I have built a heat deflector that shunts the heat down under the vehicle.

Here's a youtube vid of one that's very similar in design to what you're thinking...

SRX660 Dug this post up recently and really like the idea of this set up for a trike, i know the post is as old as the hills, i was wondering if there are any more pic, drawings or info on this trike as i would like talk to my department of transport about the possibility of building one. Any help would be greatly appreciated Cheers Clive

Sorry about all the smudges, this is from an idea sketch I made 10 or 15 yeas ago, similar to the above design. Can't say why I made the track so narrow, as I said, it was a long time ago. What appeals to me about this is the shorter length which should provide nimble handling and require a smaller footprint in the garage. Looks cool too. Engine position allows power delivery through a jack shaft working concentric with the swingarm's front pivot. That should make for zero chain binding resulting in smooth power delivery with no jacking and a longer life for the chain with fewer adjustments. The open span of the front chain behind the counter sprocket, which would no longer be made to move through an arc on the driven end, would be a great space to incorporate a starter motor for reverse. Drawbacks, as somebody already mentioned, would be heat and noise. Also, short wheelbase and rider positioned just ahead of the rear tire, would probably make for a jumpy ride.

triplethreat thank you for your reply, the shorter wheel base and narrower track are exactly what i am after, a very agile little trike for the wonderful twistys just north of us, i am in Australia more specifically Queensland, where this would be classed as a single seat bike (from a reqo point of view)and cost less than $400 Au to register per year, obviously we sit in the wrong side of the vehicle over here but i think that is not going to be a problem just need to re-organise motor and seating.
I ride motorcycles so the heat and noise is not going to be to much of a problem, just going to need some good fire proof insulation (type they use on the underside of bonnets)between me and the motor.
Going to start some drawings up and nut out a few things over the next couple of months (talk to my approving engineer)and hopefully make a start late Jan early Feb next year
Cheers Clive

Old thread that had Photobucket hosted pictures that were "LOCKED" but I added the " ~original " fix to the end of the image url and it fixed them.

Thanks Dave.
Another advantage of this layout over a center positioned rider is it opens up to the use of common production steering boxes without using a bucket full of u joints.

Hey all.
The Video of Lo-T3k is my build.
If i can help ir answer any questions please let me know. The engine to rhe side is a great idea....heat issues, if any are easy enough to get over.
Thanks. Todd
