I am judging that the weight of the front frame area of my bandit project to end up in the near 250/300 lb range. What coil over shock and spring rate would be best for it?
I am thinking around 250-300 lb springs on each side but is that right?

My trike is about 300lbs each wheel on front. I use QA1 shocks with 150 lb springs each side. 180 lb driver and passenger will cause little more than 1 inch lost of ride height.

Thats great. What kind of max length and stroke do they have if I may ask?
I am estimating my trike to weigh about 1350 lbs complete and I am not sure if the stock bandit mono shock will be enough for the rear so I might redesign it for dual shocks in the back.
How well does yours handle in sharper fast turns? Are you using a sway bar, low profile tires, etc....
I am planning on going with Verde/Calibre 17" rims on the front end with my stock 17" bandit rim on the back.
I was going to go with a semi low profile tire all around. The rear rim is 8" wide while the front rims are 7 1/2 wide so all the tires will be about the same although the rear may be a little wider.
IU have been looking at the AFCO 13T with a max length of around 13" fully extended with a 7" stroke and I am wondering if 7" is too much. They are so danged expensive...........not including the spring.

I just used suzuki gsxr shocks. They are nitro charged amd adjustable. Cheap to come by on eBay. Easily capable of the weighs you guys are talking about.

Do they have enough stroke to them.
They look like they may have only a 3" stroke and I just wonder if that is enough without bottoming them out if you hit a hard enough bump.
I was thinking of something along the lines of a 5 inch stroke with a milder 150 lb spring to give it some cushion.
Have you been riding in yours and if so does it seem to be ok.
They are certainly cheaper that is for certain. I could get 2 coilovers for the price of what 1 shock without the spring would cost new in an AFCO or a QA1.

The stroke on the QA1 shocks that I use is around 6 1/2 - 7". The only reason that I'm using these shocks is a local person came upon some hard times and was liquidating his hot rod / race car parts quickly and cheaply.
The shocks were for a project he was working on and were intended to be rear shocks, I just use them as front shocks.
First trike I built I used the front shocks from a 1982 Chrysler Cordoba. This shock has threaded ends on top and bottom. Added a coil-over mounting kit from Speedway Motors and screwed on some rod ends and "Presto" coil over hot rod shocks. They have about a 3 3/4" stroke and worked just fine.
Only reason I would stick with automotive / race car / hot rod shocks is the wide selection of springs with different spring rates available.
I use the stock Suzuki Hayabusa frame, swing arm and mono shock. A do not have a sway bar at this time, but have been thinking about adding one. Trike has just a little more body roll than I like.
Front tires are Goodyear Triple Treads 225/50/16 on 8" rims. On the rear I changed the motorcycle tire for an automotive tire, a Yokohama S-Drive 195/45/17.
That is the widest tire I can fit into the stock swing arm. I have been very impressed with the traction it has. With two people in trike it is very hard to "light" up the rear tire. Have to drop clutch above 8,000 rpm to spin it.

Hello Jim,
What size hyabusa was it that you used? My bandit has the 1200 which has stock 100HP and likem 68 ft lbs of torque I think.
I can beef it up with an engine kit and possibly get up to 148 HP but not sure I would need to. Are you still using the stock rear sprocket or did you go with one with more teeth.
My rear rim is 17" and 8" in width and has a 180 sized tire on it and I can go about 1 inch wider on each side but will have to get offset pullies and I actually like the hyabusa rear swing arm better than the bandit for more support.

Found some NTC brand coilover shocks which are nitrogen charged and have adjustable springs. One set appaers to have a pretty decent size spring with a coil diameter of 10.54mm and they are about 16 inches long and a pair of them sells brand new for 100.00. They are primarily for ATV, motorcycles, go carts, and golf carts but may work pretty good on the front end of a trike.
Does anybody know how well they "fair" and hold up?
