Hello all. My build started using all VW parts but has changed several times for many reasons. I have been using the front drive transaxel and subframe from a Subaru in building a front wheel drive RT. More recently I bought the front suspension out of a Fiero for a rear wheel drive RT. Both fronts offer many advantages. Both are self contained(having steering, brakes, and all in one crossmember or assembly) and the Fiero unit doesn't have McPherson struts to deal with. Both are cheap, around $100-$125, and both have parts available almost anywhere.

I'm a bike person ,so all this car steering & suspension is going to be a steep learning curve , I have some double a arms ( wishbones?) think thats the correct terminology , I have a set of heavy duty Quad bike front steering/suspension , but I think they will prove to be lacking the strength ? anyone have some thoughts on these ? Cheers

Well I don't specifically have any experience with Quad arms, but since no one else is responding I'll add my .02...
I know that in a lot of states it is illegal to use quad parts, or offroad parts in general, on street legal vehicles. So you may be better off sourcing parts from street legal automobiles.
BUT, this info is general -- it may change based on your specific state laws.

Even though off road parts are built to handle the pounding stress of off road abuse, in my opinion they would be plenty strong...I would discourage their use in the departments of not having a good braking system...most or all of your off road DB systems use a solid rotor...not good for removing heat in my opinion...my neighbor burned up a solid disk that was 1/4" thick and 13" in diameter that he had on his home built sand rail...when he showed it to me it looked like a warped 33 record that had been sitting in the sun.

I have decided to use a Mustang II front suspension for my RT. I picked one up used for $150. They make a TON of aftermarket parts for these things. I can get tube A-arms, air bags, etc. I figure by using this suspension set-up I can upgrade the ride quite a bit going forward.

I will agree with the versatility of the MII FS you just picked up...my 61 Ranchero was just updated with a Global West FS...very similar in design...I did a Shelby mod at the same time which it dropped the upper A-arm 1 3/4" which gave it a nice negative roll for better cornering...my 61 now goes through corners like a go cart thanks to an also improved sway bar when before the new FS it would roll like the Titanic in rough seas..LOL You will enjoy your new FS very much...my advise for the sway bar would be not to go bigger then 3/4"...anything bigger then that will just make the front end to stiff...I would also recommend going with air bags cuz you will get the ride height adjustment and a smoother ride as well as great handling. I used the Must II spindles also, these are the 2 inch drops so the susp geom would work out, Your right they are cheap and tons of ball joint styles etc... Willwood sells a set that can go front rack or rear rack and I THINK the dynalite calipers bolt right up. PooK

I see a lot of nice front suspension parts on RT, but don't people use strut rods. If you hit to hard against a curb or what ever your going to bend something. Mustang II used them coming off the lower control arm.
