I have loved Reverse Trikes since I was about 8 or 9 when a neighborhood friend's dad had a car dealership. He brought home Shelbys including a 65 GT40 and took all the kids for rides. One day he brought a Morgan 3 wheel Reverse Trike home. He gave me about a 10 mile ride and I was hooked.
But I have been around two wheel motorcycles all my life to include drag racing a 20/80% Nitromethane/Methanol Harley. Off and on I commuted on bikes since 1972 (Trail 70's and 90's) but did off road thru the 60's. Thousands of close calls and a few crashes too. I have crashed in cars, and once in a Cessna 150 too so yes crashes will happen.
About motorcycle commuting. I commuted on a motorcycle for 4 of my 9 years while stationed in (West) Germany back in the 1980's. I had two "Mishaps" that one in 1989 left me in hospital for three days. Months recovering and got hooked on pain meds for 4 months. Then I gave up motorcycles for 15 years and started motorcycle commuting again in 2004.
Many close calls until Oct 9th 2009 when a lady took my lane when I was on my Goldwing 1100i FULL DRESSED Interstate and I went down. Only 5 broken ribson my right side, broke my left shoulder and lots of road rash. 2 months recovering and 3 months "Light Duty" at work.
Fast forward to Dec 7th 2010 and I came thru an intersection on my 2008 Burgman 650 scooter, and then a 87 y/o man pulled his Pickup truck out of a 7-11 without stopping and I hit him at 40 MPH. Broke more right side ribs, lacerated my liver and right kidney and broke my right shin and right knee cap. In hospital for 2 days. Again 1 month recovering at home and 3 months light duty. Light duty at work is almost worse than the accidents themselfs.
Again forward to April 17 2015. Commuting home on another 2008 scooter and I was doing 70 MPH keeping up with two cars, I was in the left HOV lane. The Nissan in the right lane slowed down and my view was blocked by the car in the middle lane. All of a sudden a tire flew off the Nissan and over the middle car and nailed my front tire, steering me at a 45 degree angle into the concrete barrier, still doing about 70 or more MPH as I did try to out run it. I hit and then slid over 200 feet in the rosdside trash and went blank. Woke to trying to get up and a cop telling me to sit down, but no pain. Woke again to a bit of pain but still trying to stand and the cop made me sit down on the Ambulance gurney and they strapped me down. Was in and out of it and woke in the ER. This is when I as informed about all my injuries and that I had died once at the scene and once in the ER. Lots of pain now. Took lots of X-rays and into surgery. I had broke almost every rib, 9 of them on the left side with 6 of them shattered in many pieces, three on my right side. The left ribs had punctured my left lung and bruised my heart. My stomach was pushed down and a small tear in my esophagus. Broke many other bones too. Spent 7 days in the ICU, again all DOPED up. They give you a button to push for some "Happy" time . Two days in general care getting off the pain meds and then home. PAIN! I was in a wheelchair for 4 months and a walker for another 2. Went back to work on light Duty, on guess what, another scooter. Work on light duty got so bad that on Dec 1st 2015 I was forced to retire.
Back in 2010 when I had recovered enough from my Dec 2009 crash to return to work I tried to find a reverse trike. Lots of standard 1 front and 2 in the rear trikes but all the reverse trikes were over $20,000 and up to over $50K. I did not want to drive a car in the standard lanes and watch all the motorcycles rip past in the HOV lane. I wanted a trike but they were not in my budget. I even tried to BUY a a Kit business from England that was almost dead but the seller sold it to another Brit and he pretty much has let it die too.
I have almost 1,000,000 miles on motorcycles, and just about 180,000 miles on 4 different Suzuki Burgman 650 scooters. At 60+ years old my "Hooligan Rider" days are not 100% gone but down to like 30%. I love to do over 100 MPH on two wheels but at what cost??? No more commuting for work. Just joy riding and maybe a road trip or three. A Reverse Trike will work best for me with a small 1 wheel trailer behind it for road trips. A 200 mile range Electric/Battery powered trike would allow me even a road trip into Canada as I will have a 1600 watt 67 Db Generator for camping anyway. With 20 years "Camping" in the US ARMY, I like lights, Internet and a TV.
