im using a older bike a 82 honda magna i believe. it has mechanical brakes on the back, so my question is; how can i link the rear brakes into the hydraulic brake system that i have for this project.

Additionally, you will need a slave cylinder to actuate the lever on the drum brake where the rod originally hooked up.

Look at sand rails. They have slave cylinders for clutches that would be easy to adapt.

It only would need about 2 inches of travel at most. Then use a single pedal with 2 masters that have adjustable proportion. Single pedal with 1 Master and a Porp valve will work too. You really do not need too much braking, Drums all around would be fine, Disks all around is 300% overkill but hey it works. With drums you can adjust some slop in the shoes so they do not drag.

Yes, a brake cable pulls the arm to engage the brakes. A VW clutch cylinder for sand rails pulls also and is almost perfectly set up for this kind of operation.
