Here's a few pics of a successful electric trike project. It is scaled up from a bicycle, still has pedals, and meets the legal definition under the laws of the State of Missouri as an electric bicycle, no license required. Goes about 30MPH cuz that's all the law allows, has about a 60 mile range. Uses Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, Cycle Analyst controller computer that tracks mileage, speed, efficiency, and can set things like speed and power limits. Coupla pinterest pics here, full build at the link in my signature. I built it in 2013, been riding it about 7000 miles. A few interesting failures or lessons, however overall it has been a really successful hack. Pics in links below. I am now fully retired and not commuting anymore so I have thought about building a trike that fits in the yearly Electrathon bike challenge as my fun about town trike. Something I can ride into town and pickup a couple bags of stuff and stow it securely. I live about 5 to 8 miles from town on a 40 MPH speed limit road so a night charge should be enough for a few day rides into town and back.
I have my motorcycle endorsement so I'd build mine so its not limited by the 30 MPH speed limit of no license. But in Washington state if you sit "Down Inside" (not on top of it), have 3/4's enclosed cockpit and a steering wheel, all you need is a Car license to drive a Trike.
