I have been looking into building a reverse trike with a car engine, tranny and shaft drive. Mounting the engine transverse in the back and using a transaxel you get a shaft running backward, problem is the transaxel has a final drive and if using a rear axel diff the gear reduction will be to great.
Main reason for not using a chain is that the chain might break with a to powerfull engine, should one ignore this since there is v8 powered trikes etc ? What exactly breaks a chain, high power sportsbikes use 530 chain (ex tensile strength 9,300lbs)
Whats needed is a right angle gearbox with close to 1:1 with quality gears. One thought i had was to use 2 identical spider gears, pinions or ring gears out of a diff and make my own housing, that is if they even mesh that way i think the dont.

Use the shaft drive from a big motorcycle; while you're at it make it easy and use the whole swingarm asy.
Something from a big V twin ought to be more robust because it has to be strong enough to withstand the bigger torque pulses.
Since the shaft runs lengthwise, it makes more sense to use a longitudinal engine trans.

Might make more sense but theres no space I would prefer having the engine behind the seats.

true, longitudinal eng/trans is a long package

There are Polaris Slingshots with LS1 transplants that are using the stock belt final drive.

Interesting im going to look into that, wonder how that belt compares to a 530 chain and if its something you could get ahold of in various lenghts.

Use the Polaris belt and perhaps even the pulley and swingarm.

I want to use a 350/350 with drive shaft to IRS pumpkin with sprocket on one side and disc on other to width of swing arm, If you use a HP engine and a fatty tire say 18-24 "wide, then cut down a ford 9 bolt to swing arm and double the disc and double sprockets. I tried to put in photos but the file to big.
